And the U.S. Deserves Much of the Blame. &#8211; The New York Times"},"content":{"rendered":"<blockquote><p>In 2014 the United States backed an uprising \u2014 in its final stages a violent uprising \u2014 against the legitimately elected Ukrainian government of Viktor Yanukovych, which was pro-Russian.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">On Nov. 10, 2021, the United States and Ukraine signed a \u201ccharter on strategic partnership\u201d that called for Ukraine to join NATO, condemned \u201congoing Russian aggression\u201d and affirmed an \u201cunwavering commitment\u201d to the reintegration of Crimea into Ukraine. That charter \u201cconvinced Russia that it must attack or be attacked\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The United States started arming and training Ukraine\u2019s military.<\/p>\n<p>The United States is trying to maintain the fiction that arming one\u2019s allies is not the same thing as participating in combat.<\/p>\n<p>The United States is making no concessions.
