The tactics around appealing to the bottom of the barrel is that you don’t alienate the baked on followers as they don’t care or are somewhat in agreement, you generate anger in people who would never have voted for you – which can push people away from their side, and you recruit the fools at the bottom who are more than willing to follow someone spouting that sort of trash. The issue is that you are creating hostility within the general population.
