Virtual Reality Headsets for the elderly

Virtual reality (VR) headsets may help older adults feel more connected, calmer, and mentally engaged, while also showing early promise for dementia and Alzheimer’s related support when used carefully and with supervision.

VR glasses can offer older adults more than entertainment. Research suggests they may support mental health by reducing loneliness, easing anxiety, improving mood, and creating calming or meaningful experiences for people who have limited mobility or social contact. They can also support cognitive stimulation, which is relevant for healthy aging and for some people living with mild cognitive impairment or dementia.

For people with dementia or Alzheimer’s disease, VR is being studied as a non-drug support tool. Reviews and trials suggest VR may help with memory, reminiscence, apathy, and anxiety, and may improve quality of life when sessions are supervised and adapted to the person’s abilities. The evidence is promising but still developing, and most studies are small rather than definitive.

There may also be protective effects in a broader sense. VR programs can encourage gentle movement, balance practice, and engagement with activities that may help reduce conditioning, fear of falling, and social withdrawal. These are not cures, but they can support healthier routines and emotional resilience in older age.

What VR hardware should I get

For older adults, the safest and most practical recommendation is usually a standalone headset rather than a PC-tethered or console-tethered system, because it has fewer cables and less setup complexity.
Recommended hardware

Meta Quest 3: The premium version (typically $799 – $949 AUD). This is probably the best all-around choice for most seniors because it is standalone, relatively comfortable, supports hand tracking, and works well for seated experiences and virtual travel. Has an enormous library of software available (free and paid).

Meta Quest 3S: The best entry-level choice (typically priced around $568 – $569 AUD). It is affordable, features high-quality mixed reality, and is great for beginners.

Pico 4: Often praised for being lightweight and well balanced, which can help with comfort during shorter sessions (typically $1300 AUD). Can be difficult to find. Smaller amount of software available.

HTC Vive Flow: If they struggle with bulky head straps, these lightweight, glasses-style VR devices (around $370 – $380 AUD) are designed specifically for relaxation and wellness.

PlayStation VR: less ideal for seniors unless they already use a PlayStation, because it adds console dependence and more setup complexity. The device is also bulky and can’t be used for extended periods.

What VR Apps should I get

Once you have the device, you need to decide what apps you want to use on the device. There are a wide range of options, below are just three that you should probably get straight away. See the “VR for Seniors” for more suggestions.

Wander: Powered by Google Earth, this allows users to virtually revisit their childhood homes, favorite past travel destinations, or explore new cities.

Brink Traveler: A breathtaking virtual tourism app that lets them explore photo-realistic natural wonders and landscapes.

YouTube VR: Offers thousands of 360-degree videos allowing them to sit in the front row of a concert or swim with sharks.
