I rarely watch Australian Rugby League. I used to watch it quite a bit in my teens, however it became clear that referee calls affected the game more than players. Perfect and consistent refereeing is required, and it is rarely applied. This is such a problem that referees have demanded a ban on criticism. When I sat down to watch this year’s grand final (2019) I thought things might have improved. They have not. Rugby League is won and lost by referees.
